Adventure Medical Kits Sportsman 300 Field Test: The First-Aid Kit That Lives Under My Seat

The best piece of emergency gear is the piece of emergency gear you actually have with you.

That's why mine lives under the passenger seat of my car.

It's close enough that I can grab it when I'm heading into the woods, but it's also always there if something happens on a trip and I need more than the tiny first-aid supplies I might normally carry.

That makes the Sportsman 300 useful beyond just hunting.

It's effectively part of my vehicle's outdoor emergency kit.

I don't have to remember to pack it every time I leave the house. It's already there.

And when I'm going camping, it comes with me.

1. It Is Actually Comprehensive

This is probably the biggest reason I like the Sportsman 300.

It's not just a glorified box of Band-Aids.

The kit includes supplies for cuts and scrapes, wound care, burns, blisters, insect bites, medication needs, and more serious injuries. It also includes a detachable Field Trauma Kit containing items such as a trauma bandage, trauma pad, gauze, gloves, shears, a CPR face shield, and other supplies.

Adventure Medical Kits also includes wound irrigation supplies, wound-closure strips, dressings, cohesive bandaging, tape, and a variety of medications.

For a relatively compact kit, that's a lot of capability.

2. The Organization Makes Sense

One of my biggest complaints with cheap first-aid kits is that everything is thrown into one bag.

That's not what you want when you're dealing with an injury.

The Sportsman 300 uses Adventure Medical Kits' Easy Care organization system, which groups supplies by the type of injury they're intended to treat.

The exterior also has a kit map showing where supplies are located.

That sounds like a small detail.

It's not.

When you're stressed, wet, cold, bleeding, or trying to help somebody else, you don't want to dump the entire contents of your medical kit onto the ground looking for gauze.

3. The Detachable Trauma Kit Is One of Its Best Features

The removable Field Trauma Kit is particularly useful.

The full Sportsman 300 can stay in the vehicle or at camp while the smaller trauma component can be taken farther into the woods.

That gives the kit two different roles.

It can function as a comprehensive basecamp or vehicle medical kit while still giving you the option of carrying critical trauma supplies farther afield.

That's a smart design choice.

4. It Doesn't Feel Like a Kit Full of Filler

This is probably the best way I can describe the Sportsman 300.

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

There are certainly supplies in here that I hope I never have to use. That's the point.

But it doesn't feel like Adventure Medical Kits simply stuffed the bag with random items to make the contents list look impressive.

The supplies have obvious applications in the outdoors.

You've got wound-care supplies, trauma supplies, medications, blister treatment, tick/splinter removal, antiseptics, tape, dressings, irrigation supplies, and tools.

It's a practical assortment.

Medication contents can change, so check the kit and expiration dates periodically and replace anything that has expired.

It's Bigger Than a Minimalist First-Aid Kit

The Sportsman 300 isn't what I'd grab for a two-hour walk around the neighborhood.

It's a serious outdoor first-aid kit, and that means it's larger than the tiny kits designed for ultralight hikers.

That's not really a criticism—it's a tradeoff.

For smaller hikes and everyday carry, I use the Adventure Medical Kits Mountain Series Backpacker Kit instead.

That's a much better fit when I'm trying to keep things lighter and more compact.

But for my car and camping gear, I prefer the Sportsman 300.
